2021 UPDATE: Much of this coastal mountain National Forest was ravaged by wildfire both in 2018 and in 2020, so expect to have limited access for a while.

Ranch Fire (2018), part of the larger Mendocino Complex fire, took out all the southern end of the forest, including the Snow Mountain Wilderness.

459,123 acres burned in 2018

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Complex_fire

Lightning strike wildfires began in mid-August 2020, wiping out the other half of the forest. With the limited fire fighters during the pandemic, the wildland fires ranged for months, filling the whole of Northern California with thick and toxic smoke. The massive August Complex fire is now the largest in state record – with over a million acres burned.

1,032,648 acres burned in 2020

Needless to say, there will closures on many roads throughout this Mendocino NF region, due to fire cleanup, repairs and salvage logging.  This includes some campgrounds, lakes, and meadows (or glades as they call them).  Contact the local ranger station to find out what is open and when. Gated roads may be found throughout this forest.

Klamath National Forest Map

Northern California’s Klamath region is a wild and rugged country, for city folks thinking about visiting, especially during the wet winters. Call ahead to local ranger stations to find out if the roads are indeed open and if 4×4 is required. Always check the weather forecast and do not expect cell phone coverage in this remote, steep, narrow, river canyon landscape. Rock slides and landslides are quite common, therefore you should be well prepared to spend the night in your vehicle. Pack warm clothes, blankets, flashlights, food and drinking water whenever you travel in this neck of the woods.

Klamath Highway 96 – when gasoline was less than $2 per gallon!

Road Impassible?

Road conditions on Klamath Forest roads can change at a moment’s notice. In Northern California wet climate, sudden storms can cause land slides, deep mud, erosion and flash floods. Areas that were easily accessible in other seasons can become treacherous in winter. Forest roads may be closed and gated in winter months. A high-clearance vehicle is best when traveling within the Klamath National Forest, and in wetter months 4-wheel drive may be required on the back roads This region in particular has an increased risk of avalanche, even along paved Highway 96.

Rogue River National Wild and Scenic River

hiker

Rogue River in located within the state of Oregon, just above the state line of California. Flowing westward, the river joins the Pacific Ocean at Gold Beach, Oregon.

The Rogue River in southwestern Oregon flows about 215 miles in a generally westward direction from the Cascade Range to the Pacific Ocean. Known for its salmon runs, whitewater rafting, and rugged scenery, it was one of the original eight rivers named in the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968.

Beginning near Crater Lake, which occupies the caldera left by the explosive volcanic eruption and collapse of Mount Mazama, the river flows through the geologically young High Cascades and the older Western Cascades, another volcanic province.

Further west, the river passes through multiple exotic terranes of the more ancient Klamath Mountains. In the Kalmiopsis Wilderness section of the Rogue basin are some of the world’s best examples of rocks that form the Earth’s mantle. Near the mouth of the river, the only dinosaur fragments ever discovered in Oregon were found in the Otter Point Formation, along the coast of Curry County.
