Since Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular destinations inside California, several cartographers make overview maps and hiking maps for this busy park. Much of the area is covered in snow half the year and roads are closed annually. So know before you go and call the rangers. Double check campgrounds, trails, road conditions and weather, all prior to trip departure.

Tom Harrison is has an extensive list of trail maps which include the low elevations of Yosemite Valley, as well as the higher elevation backcountry. Waterproof trail maps, topographic w/ camps, canyons, climbs, creeks, lakes, peaks, all terrain.

National Geographic also makes a series of colorful Yosemite maps, which span the whole park from west to east. Waterproof, tear-resistant, folded, two-sided maps. Wilderness Press makes a couple too!

Cliff Lake Backpacking Trip, Marble Mountain Wilderness, California, Aug 2007

horse trail mapsThe Marble Mountain  Wilderness is an area of high divides, deep canyons and perennial mountain streams provides habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal life. With more than 7,000 feet of vertical relief, soils from several rock types, and abundant rain and snowfall, the diversity of ecosystems is unequaled anywhere else in the country.

fishing mapWith 89 lakes and two major Wild and Scenic river systems – Wooley Creek and the North Fork Salmon River, as well as 32 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, there are many recreation opportunities. Elevations range from 400 to 8,299 feet; the wilderness has highly variable terrain with low-elevation canyons and high ridges such as the 22-mile-long English Peak ridge.

Popular activities include fishing, backpacking, mountaineering, rock climbing, and cross-country skiing.

camp map

There are also numerous caves within this wilderness, accessible to prepared spelunkers. They all feature stalactites and other flowstone formations, and are accessible mostly by vertical drops. Due to the hidden nature of most of the cave mouths, caving is not regulated, though the Forest Service and National Speleological Society request only experienced cavers attempt to access these dangerous caves. Signs at the trail heads that access the Marble Rim warn of white nose syndrome. One of the deepest caves in the continental US is located in the wilderness, Bigfoot Cave.

Mineral King Sequoia

Mineral King Valley is inside the southern portion of SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK. Mountain passes access high Sierra terrain (only by foot trail) w/ Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon Highcountry and Golden Trout Wilderness.

camp mapsThe paved road access into this canyon (Mineral King Road) does become a dirt road for a few miles, about half way in. Pavement resumes and continues to the end – where the trailhead parking and campground is situated. Numerous creeks flow through this mountain region.

backpacking & campground camping –

This spectacular mountain setting is quite different from the rest of the Sequoia National Park. Backpackers can arrive late and sleep at the walk-in camps of Cold Springs Campground.

Access to high elevation trailheads; alpine lakes and Golden Trout Wilderness Area. Day hikes, horseback rides, fishing, mountaineering routes are plentiful.

However, bears and marmots are a problem here. Store food in the steel bear boxes provided. Marmots will eat radiator hoses and chew wiring inside your vehicle. Bring a roll of chicken wire to wrap your automobile, if you plan to leave it unattended for any amount of time.

Additionally, evening ranger programs are presented in summer months.
