The Cascade Range or Cascades is a major mountain range of western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California. It includes both non-volcanic mountains, such as the North Cascades, and the notable volcanoes known as the High Cascades.

The Cascades are part of the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire, the ring of volcanoes and associated mountains around the Pacific Ocean. All of the eruptions in the contiguous United States over the last 200 years have been from Cascade volcanoes. The two most recent were Lassen Peak from 1914 to 1921 and a major eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. Minor eruptions of Mount St. Helens have also occurred since, most recently from 2004 to 2008.

Forests of large, coniferous trees (western red cedars, Douglas-firs, western hemlocks, firs, pines, spruces, and others) dominate most of the Cascade Range. Cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers favor evergreen species, whereas mild temperatures and rich soils promote fast and prolonged growth.

As a traveler passes through the Cascade Range, the climate first gets colder, then warmer and drier east of the crest. Most of the Cascades’ lower and middle elevations are covered in coniferous forest; the higher altitudes have extensive meadows as well as alpine tundra and glaciers. The southern part of the Cascades are within the California Floristic Province, an area of high biodiversity.

Black bears, coyotes, bobcats, cougars, beavers, deer, elk, moose, mountain goats and a few wolf packs returning from Canada live in the Cascades. There have been unconfirmed sightings of Bigfoot known locally by the Native American name of Sasquatch. Fewer than 50 grizzly bears reside in the Cascades of Canada and Washington.

Rogue River Map

The Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest ranges from the crest of the Cascade Range west into the Siskiyou Mountains, covering almost 1.8 million acres. Forest headquarters are located in Medford, Oregon.

The largest river in the national forest is the Rogue River, which originates in the Cascade Range and flows through the Klamath Mountains and Coast Range. The Illinois River is a major tributary of the Rogue in the Klamath Mountains, while the Sixes, Elk, Pistol, Chetco, and Winchuck rivers drain the Coast Range directly to the Pacific Ocean.

The national forest is home to some stands of old growth, including Port Orford cedar and Douglas fir in the Copper Salmon area. A 1993 Forest Service study estimated that the extent of old growth in the forest was 345,300 acres some of which occurs in the Red Buttes Wilderness. Blue oak and Canyon live oak occur in the Siskiyou National Forest. For the California endemic Blue Oak, the disjunctive stands are occurring near the northern limit of its range, which occur no farther north than Del Norte County. The world’s tallest pine tree is a 268.35-foot ponderosa and is located in the national forest.

The Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest contains all or part of eight separate wilderness areas, which together add up to 565,900 acres:

Copper Salmon Wilderness – 13,700 acres
Grassy Knob Wilderness – 17,200 acres
Kalmiopsis Wilderness – 179,775 acres
Red Buttes Wilderness – 19,940 acres
Rogue–Umpqua Divide Wilderness – 33,200 acres
Siskiyou Wilderness – 152,680 acres
Sky Lakes Wilderness – 113,590 acres
Wild Rogue Wilderness – 35,818 acres

Canyonlands National Park: Utah Maps

Canyonlands Map

This scenic National Park is so large there are several maps covering this mini-Grand-Canyon-looking desert destination. White Rim Trail is a popular mountain bike route and primitive camping area, but it is extremely rugged and requires a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

The park preserves a colorful landscape eroded into numerous canyons, mesas, and buttes by the Colorado River, the Green River, and their respective tributaries. This National Park is divided into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the combined rivers—the Green and Colorado—which carved two large canyons into the Colorado Plateau. While these areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character.

Roaring River Falls
One of the most visited areas of the Sierra Nevada Mountains – Kings Canyon & Sequoia NP sit next door to each other, just south of Yosemite National Park.

Kings Canyon National Park has a deep granite gorge with lower elevations, along the Kings River (the longest river in the Sierra). Plus Kings also has an expansive back-country – accessible only by foot, to High Sierra peaks and many alpine lakes.

On the south side, Sequoia National Park has a higher terrain with a highway skirting the ancient groves, on the west side of the Sierra range.

Generals Highway Map

Sequoia Kings Canyon Maps

Sequoia Kings Canyon Maps

CALIFORNIA HWY 198: The Generals Highway is the main paved road that runs the ridge, north to south inside Sequoia National Park.  Since they have named the giant redwood trees after famous military generals, the road name mirrors that theme.

Now-a-days, our ancient and massive trees are fighting for their lives in a new type of war. Wildfires, drought and bark beetle infestations are taking their toll and killing these beauties. They have stood the test of time for thousands of years and withstood fires in the past, but recent blazes are hotter and more destructive than previous.

Kings Canyon Highway 180: A long, scenic, dead end road which descends dramatically into the river canyon. Elevation spans from 6600′ at Grant Grove to 4000′ at Cedar Grove at the end of the paved route.
