2021 UPDATE: Much of this coastal mountain National Forest was ravaged by wildfire both in 2018 and in 2020, so expect to have limited access for a while.

Ranch Fire (2018), part of the larger Mendocino Complex fire, took out all the southern end of the forest, including the Snow Mountain Wilderness.

459,123 acres burned in 2018

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Complex_fire

Lightning strike wildfires began in mid-August 2020, wiping out the other half of the forest. With the limited fire fighters during the pandemic, the wildland fires ranged for months, filling the whole of Northern California with thick and toxic smoke. The massive August Complex fire is now the largest in state record – with over a million acres burned.

1,032,648 acres burned in 2020

Needless to say, there will closures on many roads throughout this Mendocino NF region, due to fire cleanup, repairs and salvage logging.  This includes some campgrounds, lakes, and meadows (or glades as they call them).  Contact the local ranger station to find out what is open and when. Gated roads may be found throughout this forest.

horse trail mapsThe Marble Mountain  Wilderness is an area of high divides, deep canyons and perennial mountain streams provides habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal life. With more than 7,000 feet of vertical relief, soils from several rock types, and abundant rain and snowfall, the diversity of ecosystems is unequaled anywhere else in the country.

fishing mapWith 89 lakes and two major Wild and Scenic river systems – Wooley Creek and the North Fork Salmon River, as well as 32 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, there are many recreation opportunities. Elevations range from 400 to 8,299 feet; the wilderness has highly variable terrain with low-elevation canyons and high ridges such as the 22-mile-long English Peak ridge.

Popular activities include fishing, backpacking, mountaineering, rock climbing, and cross-country skiing.

There are also numerous caves within this wilderness, accessible to prepared spelunkers. They all feature stalactites and other flowstone formations, and are accessible mostly by vertical drops. Due to the hidden nature of most of the cave mouths, caving is not regulated, though the Forest Service and National Speleological Society request only experienced cavers attempt to access these dangerous caves. Signs at the trail heads that access the Marble Rim warn of white nose syndrome. One of the deepest caves in the continental US is located in the wilderness, Bigfoot Cave.

Sierra map

Red Buttes Wilderness is situated in both Oregon and California and includes the crest of the Siskiyou Mountains between the Rogue River and Klamath River drainages. The wilderness is 13 miles long and 6 miles wide, with elevations ranging from 2,800′ in Butte Fork Canyon to 6,740′ at the east summit of the Red Buttes.

The main waterways that flow through Red Buttes Wilderness are all part of the Rogue River watershed, including the Butte Fork and the Middle Fork of the Applegate River, as well as Sucker Creek, a tributary of the Illinois River. The Wilderness contains the headwaters of the Illinois River.

Red Buttes Wilderness takes its name from the dominant peak along the Siskiyou Crest; because of its high iron and magnesium content, the butte’s rock is a reddish-orange color.

The Siskiyou Mountains are part of the larger Klamath Mountains Province of southwestern Oregon and northwestern California, and they include some of the oldest rocks in the region.

The former ocean-bottom sediments that make up most of the Wilderness are several hundred million years old. Over time they were slowly changed by pressure and heat into the complex variety of metamorphic rocks present today: schist, quartzite, gneiss, and several outcrops of white marble. During the last ice age small glaciers sculpted the Siskiyou basins that now contain lakes and meadows.
